What is a Hearing Loop?

A hearing loop, also known as an induction loop or an audio induction loop, is a system that ensures accessibility for people living with hearing loss in public spaces, such as places of worship, theaters, lecture halls, or other venues. It works by transmitting sound directly into a hearing aid or cochlear implant that has a telecoil, also known as a “t-coil.” Hearing loops can be used by anyone, with our without hearing aids. If a user does not have a t-coil enabled hearing device, a loop receiver can be worn to enjoy the system.

How Does a Hearing Loop Work?

The hearing loop system consists of several components, the design of which is done specifically for each space.

Sound Source: The sound source could be a microphone, a public address system, or any other audio device used to amplify sound.
Amplifier: The amplifier processes the audio signal and sends it through the loop of wire.
Copper Wire Loop: The wire creates an electromagnetic field tailored to the venue’s layout.

This field is then picked up by the telecoil in compatible hearing aids or cochlear implants when the t-coil program is activated by the user.

Seamless Sound Transmission

When the telecoil program is used on the hearing device, it converts the electromagnetic field into sound, which is then delivered directly to the wearer’s ears. This direct transmission bypasses the ambient noise and reverberation in the room, resulting in a clearer and more focused sound for the individual with hearing loss.
